Canada in the american revolution from a time traveller's perspective
My name is Guy (pronounced GEE for all you americans). I live in Montreal, Quebec in 2215. I would like to travel back in time to see what was life like in Quebec during the American Revolution. Luckily I have a time machine so I can go back to that time.
Well, I'm here it doesn't look all that different. Time travel always makes me hungry so I'm going to go check out a tavern. They're all wearing weird clothes and it sure is a lot louder; but, other than that it seems the same. How about I walk up and order poutine. Oh my gosh! They haven't invented poutine this is horrible! Well at least I can eat steak. Lets try talking to the bartender about life in Quebec in 1776.
I know the Americans were interested in having the canadiens join their revolution but were not successful. I ask the bartender, Jacques, about life at that time. He tells me that many people are worn out from the seven years war but life is getting better. Jacques tells me that some American delegates; Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Chase, Charles Carroll and John Carroll were sent by General George Washington to convince the canadiens to join them but failed because the British Parliament passed the Quebec Act. This made life better for the french people in Quebec. The Quebec Act allowed people to continue their religion and speak their language just as they were doing before. They no longer longer needed swear an oath to the Queen and could keep their legal system too.
I guess I'll go back to my time machine now that I understand why Canada did not take part in the Revolutionary War.
